A medal of honor

He “fought like a cornered lion.” He certainly fought for his life and the lives of his company, a detachment of the 9th Cavalry. On that day in 1877, Clinton Greaves pushed through the storm of Chihene warriors in the Florida Mountains once negotiations stalled.

Six enlisted men, an officer, and a Navajo scout found themselves outnumbered by the group of nearly fifty Apaches. Perhaps the numerical advantage pushed Victorio’s band to attack. Maybe they sought precious supplies to continue their quest to remain in their sacred homelands.

Greaves’ Congressional Medal of Honor couldn’t shield him from white settlers’ racism.
