Leopoldo López: A New Direction

 Whenever Landín left town, whether to Deming to attend to the status of Mexican citizens impressed into the US military or to visit family in Mexico or to get married in Hermosillo, Leopoldo López took charge of the consulate in his stead. 

Who was López? 

A native of León, Guanajuato, he had been in Columbus since September 1917 when he was appointed as "First Agent of the Mexican Secret Service assigned to Columbus, NM." La República called him a "mozo de Hipólito Villa" who had become a carrancista. He played a regular role in Columbus' Colonia Mexicana, according to the Courier
