"Because it was the only way we could be safe"

 Flashes of memory, you were eleven years old.

You're worried because the town shouldn't be ablaze. Thick smoke and commotion. Where is your father? He said they wouldn't be long. Watch the horses, they'll be back in a few. 

Running down the hill, you pass the rail station and enter one of the main streets. You push to the edge to get around the skirmish. The sounds of gunfire fill your ears. Where is he?

Haze. Bodies falling all around you. You can't get up. 

Years later, before the subcommittee, they ask why you were with Villa on that morning.

  1. whoa, this is such great use of second-person! I felt totally pulled in while at the same time I could see you crafting a historical character. very cool!
