A Little Context

The El Paso papers reflect conflicts that defined the Mexican Revolution as it wound down.

Once Venustiano Carranza rose to power and Generals Alvaro Obregón and Plutarco Elías Calles had neutralized Villa and Zapata militarily, Carranza put forward Ygnacio Bonillas as his successor for the 1920 elections. Bonillas was a civilian and the current Ambassador to the United States.

He was relatively unknown to the Mexican public, though, and Obregón believed his was a more legitimate claim to the presidency due to his integral role in defeating Carranza’s opposition.

Obregón and Calles ousted Carranza in the Plan de Agua Prieta.
